Als ich die Kurzbeschreibung zu diesem Buch las, musste ich es einfach haben. Die Story klang nach etwas, das ziemlich außergewöhnlich ist und nicht wirklich in Büchern angesprochen wird. Und was soll ich sagen? Das Buch war wirklich gut!Kip war für mich ein wirklich sehr vielschichtiger Charakter. Er hat wirklich viele Facetten und ich habe sehr gerne über ihn gelesen. Während des Lesens fragte ich mich oft: War er wirklich ein Mörder, obwohl die "Tat" im Kindesalter passierte? Die Autorin hat dieses Thema wirklich sehr gut ausgearbeitet, sie ist sehr sensibel und trotzdem sehr ehrlich damit umgegangen. Ihr Protagonist ist sehr gut ausgearbeitet worden, ich habe die ganze Zeit mit ihm mitgefiebert und hing an den Seiten.Der Schreibstil war wirklich sehr flüssig und leicht zu lesen. Auch sehr gut für Englischanfänger geeignet. Ich kam mit dem Lesen sehr schnell voran, weil ich die Gedankengänge von Kip so interessant fand.Jedoch muss ich sagen, dass ich mir etwas mehr Handlung gewünscht hätte. Kip ist wirklich ein ausgezeichnet ausgearbeiteter Charakter, aber die Handlung wurde etwas außen vor gelassen. Die Autorin hat ihr Augenmerk hauptsächlich nur auf Kip gerichtet gehabt, worunter die Handlung meiner Meinung nach etwas litt.Das ist aber schon mein einziger Kritikpunkt.Ein Buch, das ich jedem empfehlen kann, egal ob Jugendlicher oder Erwachsener.

Auch die Reaktionen der Öffentlichkeit, ihr bigottes Verhalten, der namenlose und unreflektierte Hass, der über Kip und seiner Familie ausgegossen wird, ist beeindruckend beschrieben. Viele der umgangssprachlichen Begriffe und Bemerkungen versteht man nicht richtig, aber die Sprache ist insgesamt mäßig anspruchsvoll, so dass die Altersgruppe der ab 15-jährigen gut getroffen ist. Ich fand es erholsam, dass die Autorin auf Kitsch weitestgehend verzichtete.
