Auf einer Südafrika-Reise war ich auch auf Robben Island, wo Nelson Mandela jahrelang in politischer Haft einsass. Die anschaulichen Erklärungen des Führers, der selbst als politischer Gefangener auf Robben Island war, veranlassten mich, tiefer in die jüngere Geschichte dieses faszinierenden Landes einzutauchen.Das Buch ist lang (über 500 Seiten, aber das spielt auf dem Kindle zumindest gewichtsmäßg ja keine Rolle) und sehr personenreich, besonders in der ersten Hälfte verliert man leicht den Überblick. Später konzentriert es sich dann mehr auch die naturgemäß kleinere Zahl von Mitgefangenen, so dass es leichter wird.Wer sich für Südafrika interessiert und ein wenig Zeit hat, sollte dieses Buch kaufen. Empfehlenswert.
Very good!Every human being should read this story of South Africa's (and hence Mandela's) struggle for freedom. Although a bit tedious at times because of all the names (which are difficult to remember anyway), this book should be mandatory at schools as it documents contemporary history. Mandela went to jail as a radical militant and emerged 27 years later as a Gandhian figure focussed on nation building. This is a testament to the power of forgiveness and acceptance, Mandela's rigid adherence to his notion of freedom and equality for black South Africans, and the ultimate emergence of the Rainbow Nation.Very little is said about Winnie Mandela's involvement in unsavoury dealings and her subsequent conviction, although she was later let off on bail. The first edition of this book was published during the Mandelas' separation, so it's understandable. Five stars for the historic pictures, as well.
Dass das Leben eines Mannes wie Nelson Mandela genug für ein Buch gibt war im voraus klar. In diesem Buch wurde es sehr kurzweilig umgesetzt. Auch die vielen kurzen Kapitel erleichtern das Lesen für Menschen, die nicht stundenlang Zeit haben.Natürlich ist dies ein Autobiographie aus der Sicht eines vielleicht altersmilden Menschen. Ich habe nach der Lektüre das Gefühl, dem Menschen Mandela etwas näher gekommen zu sein. Auch die Auseinandersetzung zwischen der Hingabe für seine Berufung und seiner Familie waren interessant geschrieben und nahmen einiges an Raum ein. Auch seine Entwicklung vom jungen ehrgeizigen Studenten zum Versöhner war sehr interessant. Einen Punkt Abzug gibt es nur für die unkritische Haltung zu sich selbst und seiner Organisation. Da half auch nicht sein Understatement, dass ich manchmal etwas unglaubhaft fand. Alles in allem eine kurzweilige, interessante und bewegende Lektüre.
This is an interesting piece that portrays the struggle of a country to independence from one persons perspective. It gives a lot of details information and thereby also pays tribune to many characters that are not as popular and maybe forgotten in contrast to its famous writer.I would advise to read it if one is very interested in South African history, wants to get a detailed overview of what happened and what did not, also in light of the countries current situation.Personally i liked the part where Mandela is still rather young and the part where he is in prison most, as it seems to be most authentic, and relatively short. In other parts of the book it can get a bit tiering as he really puts a lot of detail into it.Therefore:- interesting read for SA fans and to check details- otherwise a bit too long and specific

Diese Autobiographie liest sich wie ein Märchen, wie eine Geschichte aus einer anderen Welt. Es ist bislang die einzige Autobiographie, die ich gelesen habe. Daher war ich überrascht, wie fesselnd so etwas sein kann. Aber das liegt sicherlich nicht nur an der Erzählkunst, sondern auch an dem unglaublich bewegten Leben, das Nelson Mandela hatte. Wer mehr über Mandela, die Apartheid in Südafrika und den Kampf gegen sie wissen möchte, sich aber vor trockenen Geschichtsbüchern fürchtet, ist hier richtig. Bei aller Ernsthaftigkeit des Themas macht es doch Spaß, dieses Buch zu lesen. Dies gilt zumindest für die englischsprachige Ausgabe. Über eine deutsche Fassung kann ich nichts sagen.

Ein höchst interessantes und aufschlussreiches Buch, in dem man auch viel von seiner frühen, weniger bekannte, Geschichte erfährt. Allerdings können die langen Passagen, in denen es um Gerichtsverfahren, usw geht, etwas seeehr lang werden... Aber ansonste eine durchaus interessante Lektüre, die ich jedem nur empfehlen kann.
